The Nippon Seiki range of motorcycle speedometers are a well known and robust fitment on many models from manufacturers such as Honda, Suzuki, Yamaha.
The biggest issue faced by owners of these units today is due to lack of internal lubrication and failure of the odometer and trip gears.
When new the units were lubricated with a high quality grease on all gears and shafts, however after some 40 years it is not surprising that this grease has dried and is no longer lubricating the parts to which it was applied.
Damaged gears of both plastic and steel materials are a common failure as can be seen in the restoration images below.
The images show the extent of the damage to the metal gears. The worm gear on the shaft is a single piece and requires precision machining in order to fit the newly made part.
