JAEGER & SMITHS Fuel Gauges
A typical FG unit before and after restoration
The FG and .X type fuel gauges produced under both Jaeger and Smiths Trademarks are a common fitment on pre-war British Cars.
Typified by their undamped pointer movement that responds to cornering and bump forces as well as fuel movement, The units readings can also be affected by magnetic fields around cables such as those connected to the ammeter.
It is always best to check and ensure that high current wires are not too close to the gauge, a task made more difficult when the ammeter sits close in the dash.
While the basic operation of the gauge will always require a measure of interpretation, calibration of the unit allows you to be confident in its readings.
